Did you kind of forget how great a band R.E.M. was? That their early work is flawless, and still sounds fresh decades later? That even after they signed to a major label and went top 40, their songs were still that good? That even after that phase, when they seemed to have much less to say, they were STILL writing and recording some pretty incredible songs? I did, a little bit. This two-disc, career-spanning compilation, streaming free in its entirety at NPR, is a pretty stellar reminder.
